The Virgin of Pompei’s festivity / La festa della “Madonna di Pompei”

Sulle pendici del Monte Caramola, in una piccola frazione chiamata “S. Biase”, si erge una cappella, fatta costruire nel 1899 dal parroco allora in carica,
nella quale è custodita la statua della Madonna di Pompei la cui festa ricorre ogni anno in agosto. Secondo la tradizione, la statua viene portata in paese la seconda Domenica di Agosto e, dopo essere stata esposta e venerata, ritorna nella sua cappella nella quarta Domenica di Agosto. I festeggiamenti che precedono ed accompagnano il ritorno della statua sulla montagna si svolgono il Sabato e la Domenica. Iniziano il Sabato pomeriggio con una messa all’aperto, la processione per le vie del paese, un concerto ed i fuochi d’artificio a tarda sera. La Domenica mattina, dopo la messa mattutina, inizia la risalita della statua accompagnata da una moltitudine di pellegrini. Il percorso che dal paese porta alla cappella e segnato da quindici edicole raffiguranti immagini sacre, presso le edicole la processione man mano si ferma e viene accolta dalla gente che abita nei pressi che, in onore della Madonna, offre a tutti biscotti, dolci, frittelle ed altre bontà e poi si unisce ad essa fino alla cappella.
Finita la processione ed esposta la statua nella cappella, tutti si organizzano per un ricco pic-nic nel bosco e la festa continua in allegria fra canti, musiche e … brindisi per il resto della giornata. Questa è senza dubbio la festa a cui i Francavillesi sono più legati ed anche quest’anno, Domenica 24 Agosto, molti vi hanno partecipato sia per devozione alla Madonna e sia per trascorrere un’allegra giornata all’aria aperta.

On the slopes of the Mount Caramola, in a little village called S. Biase, a chapel, made in the 1899 by the parish at that time in office and in which the statue of the Virgin of Pompei, whose festivity is celebrated in August, is kept, lays. In order to the tradition, the statue is got to the town on the second Sunday of August and, after it has been exposed and venerated , comes back to its chapel on the fourth Sunday of August. The rituals that precede and accompany the Virgin’s come back on the mountain take place on Saturday and on Sunday. They start on Saturday afternoon with a mass outside, the procession through the streets of the town, a concert and the fireworks at late night. On Sunday morning, after the early morning mass, the going up again of the statue accompanied by a moltitude of pilgrims starts. The way that from the town gets to chapel is traced by fifteen aedicules depicting holy images, at the aedicules the procession a little by little stops and is welcame by the people living in the neighbourhood that, in the Virgin’s honour, offers everyone biscuits, cakes, pancakes and other goods and then joins it until the chapel.
When the procession is over and the statue exposed in the chapel, everyone organizes a rich pic-nic in the wood and the festivity goes on in cheerfulness among songs, music and .. toasts for the rest of the day. This is without doubt the festivity to which the Francavilla inhabitants are more close and also this year, on Sunday 24 August, many of them partecipated to it either for the Virgin devotion or to spend an happy day in the open air.
