” Furono martiri del III sec. sepolti nel cimitero di S. Callisto a Roma. L’iscrizione sepolcrale ci attesta che furono martiri e che S. Policarpo era prete. Le reliquie dei Martiri furono traslate a Francavilla il 9 Agosto 1626. Il 10 Agosto 1628, a causa di copiose grazie ottenute, furono solennemente eletti Principali Protettori di Francavilla. Da allora la festa ricorre ogni anno il 10 Agosto”.
Anche quest’anno la festa si è svolta con la messa celebrata all’aperto, la processione per le strade del paese con le statue precedute dalla Banda e seguite dai fedeli in preghiera, un concerto ed i fuochi di artificio a tarda sera. Ma, da qualche anno, è stata ripristinata una vecchia tradizione in disuso: durante la processione le statue sono precedute da persone che sfilano portando sulla testa i”cìgljë“: particolari decorazioni realizzate con spighe di grano o candele arricchite da nastri e fiori. La cosa più bella e folkloristica è un ballo tipico che essi fanno, con i “cìgljë” in testa di fronte ai Santi.
“They were martirs of the 3th century, bureid in the St. Callisto’s Cemetery in Rome. The sepulchral inscription attests that they were martirs and that St. Policarpo was a priest. The Martirs’ relics were moved to Francavilla on 9th August 1626. On 10th August 1628, because of plentiful graces, were solemny elected Main Patrons of Francavilla. From then the festivity is celebrated every year on 10th August”.
Also this year the festivity was celebrated with a Mass outside, the procession through the streets of the town with the musical band preceding and the praying believers following the statues, a concert and the fireworks at late night. But, since some years, an unused old tradition has been reviving:during the processio the statues are preceded by people that parade taking on their head the “cìgljë“:particular decorations made with wheat ears or candles enriched by flakes and flowers. The dance they do with the “cìgljë” on their head in front of the Saints is the most beautiful and flkloe thing.
